"Verbes videre, Vivre in fabulis"
Creating stories and bringing them to live has always been a fascination of mine. From poetry to scientific presentations, having a good story to tell and knowing how to capture the audiences' attention is as challenging as rewarding. One particular hobby that helps me develop my storytelling skills are table-top roll playing games (TRPG).
Dungeons and Dragons might be the most famous TRPG. It allows the player to dive into a medieval fantasy world filled with magic, strange creatures and knights in shining armor. By working together and honing their skills, they can fight the various evil forces in their world. To create such a world for the players requires a lot of preparation. Idealy, it should be filled with interesting challenges, puzzles to solve and a captivating story the players can experience. The story needs to be intriguing, well-thought-out but at the same time flexible to whatever the players actually do. And let me tell you, they will definitely deviate from whatever you had planned for them. Creating stories in this environment is exactly how it should be: challenging and rewarding
During several years of playing Dungeons and Dragons, I created many worlds and crafted many stories. Some smaller ones, like the story of a monster riddled world were brave adventurers hunt monsters called "The Hunter and the Hunted". Or the story of soldiers stationed at an outpost who need to protect the surrounding villages called "A Vally in Peril". To help you out, I have created some example characters to dive right into a one shot. Dragons adaptation of "Die Hölenwelt Saga". This work is still ongoing but feel free to contact me to learn more!
During the anthology Around Distant Suns, I had the pleasure to work together with Guy Woods. Together we created the radio play "Cloudgazing". In it, Mary meets a strange cloud which leads to unexpected discoveries. Working together with Guy thought me a great deal on screen play writing which was interestingly different to what I did before. I hope to have similar opportunities in the future.
